Rites of Passage
A rite of passage is a transion between one part of life another, and most frequently - the movement between child and adulthood. As a form of discovery, a rite of passage provides an opportunity for the sharing of skills and knowledge, personal reflection, community celebration, recognition, and personal growth. Coming of age in various tribal societies, establishes entry into an age grade—generally gender-separated—(unlike an age set) is marked by an initiation rite, which may be the crowning of a long and complex preparation, sometimes in retreat. The senses
Our senses are the only access we have to discovering the world in which we live. Imagine living without one of your senses? Can you 'see' how different our discovery of the world we live in would be without hearing, seeing, touching, tasting or smelling? Or even more challenging; imagine life without the capacity to interpret the sensory world we live within? So our senses are fundamental to the notion of discovery and the making of meaning. The youtube video on the left is an interesting discussion on how the brain processes sensory information from the world to create our 'discoveries. ' By viewing even a small section of this clip, you may discover something new about your perception of the world around you, and it may suggest other related texts that you might choose to explore for the Area of Study. |
